Eight years ago, a crowded Democratic field headed into the Iowa Caucuses with visions of defeating a weak President George W. Bush in November. The pre-primary season had been contentious, with various personalities emerging as leaders throughout the late summer and fall of 2003.

Before I go into my rant against Howard Schultz' latest proposal, a few words of explanation. I live in Seattle. I drink a lot of Starbucks Coffee. I frequently use their locations for meetings, and I occasionally buy music there. So this is not just Rage Against the Macchiato.

The problem for Democrats and Obama has nothing to do with the President's legislative accomplishments. During his first two and half years in office, President Obama has had extraordinary success, even if liberals today aren't satisfied and voters are frustrated with the process. The problem lies in their failure to control the message and, thus, the political agenda.

When Republicans talk about less government, they mean fewer services. They mean less money for schools and teachers, fewer services for the disabled, less fuel in wintertime and less air conditioning in summer. They mean less public transportation and fewer repairs to roads and bridges. In short, they mean less of anything that costs money.

Last month Roll Call published an article on Southern Congressional prospects with the following "Want Ad" for Congressional candidates:
The want ad might look something like this: "Seeking a fiery, pro-business, pro-gun, anti-abortion-rights Southern Democrat to run for Congress in a substantially Republican district against a GOP incumbent. A potent populist message is a big plus. Candidates with strong ties to Washington and/or President Barack Obama need not apply."
In other words, the winning path for Southern Democrats is to be a Republican.

The looming budget debate over the debt ceiling and spending offers an opportunity for Obama that may improve his chances of victory in 2012. It could do for the President what welfare reform did for Bill Clinton in 1996.
